Maija Butters is a Finnish Cultural Anthropologist currently living with her husband and two children in Santa Cruz, California.

Maija started her studies in University of Oulu and have since studied in l’Université de Montréal and University of Helsinki, where she graduated with a M.A. degree in 2001. Maija has also done extensive field work among Tibetans living in the Indian Himalayas.

In the area of cultural anthropology and comparative religion, Maija’s interests include Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, art and culture. She has also focused her studies on the expression and concept of ‘sacred’ in different religious systems and languages. Maija has published two books in Finland on Tibetan Buddhism and art (see publications) and produced an exhibition on Tibetan Buddhist art (Helinä Rautavaara Museo).

Aside from her specialization in South Asian culture, Maija has always appreciated the value of feminist studies. Since the birth of her daughter in 2003 she has dedicated considerable time to the study of the experience of motherhood and its multimedia representation through photographs, interviews and literature. As a result of this study, her book on the mysteries of motherhood is being published in Finland in the fall of 2007 concurrent with a photo exhibition at Galleria LEO, Helsinki.

Hän on kirjoittanut kaksi kirjaa tiibetiläisestä taiteesta ja buddhalaisuudesta sekä tuottanut tiibetinbuddhalaisen taiteen näyttelyn Suomeen vuonna 2003. Viimeiset vuodet Maija on perehtynyt äitiyden ja feminismin kiemuroihin kirjojen, kameran, mikrofonin sekä neljävuotiaan Taikan ja kaksivuotiaan Indigon avulla. Hänen äitiyttä käsitteleviä töitään on ollut aikaisemmin esillä Hämeenlinnassa Taidegalleria Ripustuksessa sekä Iisalmen Kulttuurikeskuksessa.
